Chittagong Shipbreaking yards fined Taka 3.7mn by DOE:

Chittagong, July 21 (bdnews24.com) – The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined seven shipbreaking yards Tk 3.65 million for violating environmental laws.

On Thursday, a team led by director general of DoE Monwar Islam raided different shipyards in Sitakunda area.

The yards fined are situated in Kadamrasul, Dakkhin Shitalpur, Sonaichori and Salimpur areas of Sitakunda district.

Tazminur Rahman, the assistant director (technical) of the DoE told bdnews24.com that fines were slapped as they did not follow the laws completely.

"The team found faults in 7 yards," he added.

The team also found that labours did not wear helmets, hand gloves, safety dresses, safety shoes and nose mask etc.

The owners of the shipyards were directed to start abiding by all the rules within July 28, Rahman informed.
